What is Involved in an SEO Campaign

Many people wonder what is involved in an SEO campaign. It is typically part of a long-term strategy that involves many aspects, such as keyword research, content auditing, SEO analysis, on-page optimization, link building, and many other considerations. The end goal is to improve search engine rankings.

64% of marketers create SEO campaigns because they help satisfy multiple key performance indicators (KPIs), including increasing traffic, helping your site rank for relevant keywords, and improving your conversion rate.

BackLinking

Backlinking is the process of showing your authority and relevancy by having reputable brands reference your content in their content.  This is a great strategy because it serves as kind of like a referral to the search engines, like Google, the same way that you might give a referral of a dentist or hair salon to a friend.

On Page SEO

On-page SEO is the process of optimizing content on a page to help Google understand what the page is about.  This mainly starts with keyword research.  You need to identify which words or phrases your target audience is using in their online search when they look for the type of products or services that you offer.

Meta Tagging

A meta tag is a short summary that tells the search engines what a page is about.  It is important that your meta tags are optimized with the keywords for which you are trying to rank.

Keyword Rich Copy

After the keyword research is done, and you have identified which keywords you want to rank for, you need to write keyword-rich,  but clear and concise copy.  Your copy should be informative and written for the user – not the algorithm.  After all, the purpose is to give the user the information they are looking for.  What use is it to get people to your site, but not answer their questions, or not provide useful information in a straightforward and easy to understand format?  Kinda defeats the purpose, right?  If users don’t immediately see the relevancy in the content, they leave anyway, resulting in a high bounce rate.  Google captures that activity and will stop serving your page in the SERPS for that key phrase, which will cause your visits to decline – and then…well, you’re back where you started.  See how that all works?

Header Tags, Image Alt Tags, and Schema

Header tags are equally as important.  Search engines read those when deciding on the relevancy of your page to a user’s query.  Image alt tags also play a significant role.  You want to help the search engines understand what the image is about and how it relates to your content.

Another process is schema markup, which is code that is placed on your site that helps the search engines to return a more informative or rich result for the user.  You can run a test to see if your site is eligible for rich results here.

Technical

In addition to all of the on page SEO, there are the technical processes, which include URL structure, site map submission, checking for “crawlability”, reducing page load time if necessary, and site security.

If this seems like a lot of work, that’s because it is.  And there are no alternatives or shortcuts.  SEO takes time, diligence, and patience.  In the long run, it definitely pays off, and it’s really the only way to achieve the goal of ranking in search engines

There is a joke in the Digital Marketing world that says the best place to hide a dead body is the 2nd page of Google SERPs.  Why?   Because no one ever looks there!

The reality is everyone obviously can’t be on the first page of the SERPs, but you can rank high enough for some (or even one) of your relevant keywords to impact your bottom line.

It’s a long term – and ongoing – process.  Google’s algorithm is always changing as new and innovative ideas are incorporated to ascertain they are providing the best product for their users.  Keeping up with best practices, as well as new technologies, will ensure that your content is always poised to show Google why they should match you to their users.
